Houses of the world

A house as we all know is a place for shelter and refuge.but  as an interior designer one must understand well the different houses which people design to live and make for themselves before we go or start to design one for ourselves or for our client.

SALTBOX-A type of wood -framed house found especially in new england .it is two full stories high in front and one story high in the back .the roof having about the same pitch in both directions so that the ridge is well towards the front of the house.

CAPE COD HOUSE-A style of cottage developed mainly on Cape Cod ,Massachusetts,in the 18th and early centuries,typically a rectangular ,one or one and half story ,wood frame house with white clapboarded or shingle walls,a gable roofwith low eaves and usually no dormer,a large central chimney,and a front door located on one of the long sides.

Studio Apartment- An apartment consisting of a single multifunctional room,a kitchen,or kitchenette and a bathroom.Also called as an Efficiency  Apartment

Apartment house-A building containing a number of apartments units.Also called apartment building.

Housing units-A house ,apartment,suite of rooms or a single room occupied or intended for occupancy as  separate living quarters

Garden apartment-a apartment having an access to a garden or a backyard garden and situated on the ground floor of an apartment building.

Duplex Apartment-An apartment with rooms on two connected  floors .Also called DUPLEX

Duplex House - A house having separate apartment for two families ,especially a two story house having a complete apartment on each floor and two separate entrance .Also called duplex

Triplex-A building having 3 apartments ,an apartment having 3 floors or a multiplex of 3 theaters.

Penthouse-An apartment or residence on the top floor or roof of a  abuilding ,often set back from the outer walls and opening onto a terrace.

Flat-an apartment or suite of rooms on one floor forming a residence.

Walk -up-An apartment above the ground floor  in a building that has no elevator.

Split level-A house having a room or rooms somewhat above or below adjacent rooms ,with the floor levels usually differing by approximately half a story

Bi-Level-A two -story house having the lower level sunken below grade and an entry at grade halfway between the two levels

Bungalow-A derivative of the Indian bungalow popular especially in the first quarter of the 20th century.Usually having one or one half stories,a widely bracketed gable roof ,a large porch ,and often built of rustic material.

Bungalow court-A group of 3 or more detached ,one story,single family dwelling,arranged with common utilities and accessories under a common ownership.

Dutch colonial-Of or pertaining to the domestic architecture of dutch settlers in New york and New Jersey in the 17th century.Often characterized by gambrel  roofs having curved eaves over porches on the long sides.

Rambler-Aone story house with a low pitched roof ,especially one built in the suburbs.

Tract houses-A house  forming part of a real -estate  development usually having a plane and appearance common to some or all of the houses in the development.

Apart from these you have condominium,cooperative apartment,townhouse,row houses, mew,breezeway,semidetached,prairie school( a name for a house),detached building, brownstone and crescent.we need to first assess what is the need before we design any house ,not just blindly start designing a house ,instead ask the need whether it is a studio apartment ,bungalow etc then we need to Ideate and go ahead with the design of Residential areas.
